IHI Advanced Clinical Internship

Applications for IHI’s 2024-2025 Advanced Clinical Internship are now closed.

An important message to all applicants:

Thank you for your interest in the Advanced Clinical Internship at The Institute for Human Identity | IHI Therapy Center (IHI). IHI  offers a fully-rounded program of internships for second year social work students (MSW), second year mental health counseling students (MHC), and second year marriage and family therapists (MFT). Accepted applicants may commence their practicum experience in the Summer; all internships will commence in the Fall and culminate in either the Spring or Summer semesters.

The internship program includes experience in providing individual, couples/partners, and group psychotherapy; individual and group supervision; a weekly seminar program with guest lecturers; and experience in professional development through internship projects. Interns are expected to establish and maintain an assigned caseload of ten (10) clients and must be  available  to conduct  client sessions during evening hours and  be available to attend Monday morning group seminar.

Due to its reputation for quality training, the internship is highly competitive. Consequently, we have introduced a new application process  which includes an initial round of applicant screening. Applicants who move beyond the screening will have provided a resume that demonstrates  previous experience relevant to IHI’s mission and client population and highlights the applicant’s strengths and transferable skills as a prospective psychotherapist-in-training.  Additionally, applicants will be asked to submit answers to several questions that gauge the applicant’s ability  to self-reflect and to  write clearly and concisely.  Following application review, IHI will contact eligible candidates who meet the above criteria and who will then advance to a final round where they will be asked to share more details about their experiences in a clinical or quasi-clinical setting.

Some additional qualities IHI looks for in an advanced clinical intern are::

  • Interest and knowledge of the mission of IHI and a desire to invest long-term in the mission of the Institute for the betterment of both clients and fellow staff

  • Desired post-graduate career focus on clinical work. IHI’s primary means of creating systemic change is through training and educating providers in sexuality- and gender-affirming psychotherapy as well as offering long-term psychotherapy for individuals, couples and groups

  • Foundational competencies and a specific interest and/or experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community

  • An understanding and clinical orientation of intersectionality and the compounded social impacts of discrimination, bias, racism, minority stress, social stigma, and violence on LGBTQIA+ individuals with multiple-marginalized identities, how these impacts present within the  therapeutic relationship, and a professional desire to  consistently prioritize clients’ unique lived experiences

  • Willingness to learn and respond in a professional manner to constructive feedback from supervisors, colleagues, and IHI leadership. Supervisory relationships at IHI are collegial and collaborative

  • Self-driven, open-minded students who are adept at self-management skills. This includes the ability to regulate one’s emotions and behaviors in a variety of new experiences and situations while understanding when to seek additional support from the robust resources provided by IHI

Most importantly, we are passionate about building the aforementioned skills with our intern cohort and look forward to reviewing your application. Feel free to contact info@ihitherapy.org with any additional questions.
