IHI celebrates 50th Anniversary with artwork by queer Brazilian artist Jenifer Prince

IHI kicks off the Pride 2023 season with a commissioned illustration by queer Brazilian visual artist and illustrator Jenifer Prince!

This year, IHI celebrates our 50th anniversary as the nation's first and longest-running provider of queer- and trans-affirming psychotherapy. To mark this auspicious moment in our history, IHI is focused on the chorus of perspectives, lived experiences, artistic expressions, and stories that comprise our broader community.

Because Prince creates art focused on lesbian and sapphic storytelling, which she describes as "love, life, sexuality and everything-in-between," IHI Executive Director Tara Lombardo felt Prince could capture the organization's ethos and mission from a lens of lived experience and shared community.

"For 50 years," remarked Lombardo, "IHI has proudly served the LGBTQ community and beyond. We consider the commitment to self-care via therapy as a revolutionary act. Only in relationship to each other can we see ourselves and grow. We asked Jenifer to envision our mission and commitment to the LGBTQ community with an illustration that celebrates the beauty, diversity, and strength of our community as a whole and the many intersections of identity we collectively inhabit."

Prince's work is characterized by a combination of mid-century comic aesthetic influence, storytelling, and pop culture references. She was the 2016 winner of the Official Poster of the San Francisco Dyke March and she continues to create art inspired by activism and social change. She has created illustrations and artwork for major international clients like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HP, Showtime, Penguin Random House, and others.

"We are proud to have supported our communities with critical psychoemotional support decade after decade," stated Lombardo. "We plan to build on that support as we create new relationships, services, and initiatives in the decades ahead."
