IHI celebrates 50 years of service to NYC’s LGBTQIA+ communities!

IHI celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a screening of CURED and a reception bringing together current and former staff and long-time allies

On May 24, 2023, IHI celebrated its 50th anniversary as the nation's first and longest-running provider of queer- and trans-affirming psychotherapy! Former and current staff of the organization as well as long-time allies gathered at The Center—New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center—for a screening of CURED, the award-winning documentary focused on the LGBTQ equality and the campaign that led the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses. IHI’s late founder, Dr. Charles Silverstein, who died earlier this year, was part of that campaign and is featured in the film. The screening served as a poignant frame for the anniversary celebration and as a moment to remember and honor his contributions.

IHI Executive Director Tara Lombardo gave remarks and read an excerpt from IHI’s original mission statement written by Charles, stating the original impetus and critical need to create a professional organization to honor and serve New York City’s LGBTQIA+ communities.

The screening was followed by a reception and reunion of IHI leadership, former staff, long-time allies, current staff members, and IHI’s incoming class of Advanced Clinical Interns. HAPPY 50th IHI!
